Digital Forensics - The challenges and opportunities

Computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and mobile phones are examples of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Affordability and increased functionality has led to a worldwide proliferation of ICT devices. As a consequence ICT are used both to commit crimes and capture evidence of a wide range of crimes ranging from terrorism to sexual assault. This keynote address will discuss the challenges and opportunities of forensic computing in the ever changing ICT environment.

Marc Kirby is currently the academic lead for the MSc Forensic Computing course at Cranfield University. He is the former Head of Computer Forensics at the United Kingdom’s internationally acclaimed National Hi-Tech Crime Unit. He is an adviser to governments and responsible for policy development in this fast moving area. He is an international expert in e-crime who created the world’s first multi-agency national Computer Forensic Unit. Marc recently contributed to the “Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) Guide to Computer Based Evidence 2001 to 2007” and the “UK Police (ACPO) Hi-Tech Crime Strategy 2004-2006”.
