The electronic eye: From school yard bullying to tracking terrorists

Dr. Zeno J. Geradts
Digital Evidence Section
Netherlands Forensic Institute

Note: Due to unforeseen circumstances, the publicised plenary titled “The electronic eye: From school yard bullying to tracking terrorists” to be presented by Zeno Geradts has been cancelled. It has been replaced with "Forensic CCTV - A powerful tool for the investigation of terrorism"

Digital CCTV and mobile video phones are examples of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). This form of multimedia combines the attributes of audio visual recording devices and computers. Growth in the private security industry, technical innovation and affordability has led to a worldwide proliferation of ICT devices. These technologies are used by victims, business, police, local government and offenders themselves to capture evidence of a wide range of crimes including terrorism, sexual assault and bullying. This in turn is driving developments in forensic services such as biometrics (eg. face identification) and audio visual signal processing. This plenary will focus on the opportunities that exist to adapt and improve the delivery of forensic services within an ever changing ICT environment.

Dr Zeno Geradts is the R&D coordinator of the Digital Evidence Section of the Netherlands Forensic Institute. He is also a senior Forensic Scientist specialising in the areas of Image Analysis and Biometrics.

He is perhaps best known for his popular "Dr Zeno’s Forensic Site" http://forensic.to. Established in 1993, the site covers all areas of forensic science from DNA to Questioned Documents and is an excellent resource to forensic practitioners, students and the general public. Dr Geradts is a prolific writer of scientific papers and holds key positions on many European and International expert committees and journals including Chairman of the Digital Evidence and Multimedia Section of the American Academy of Forensic Science (AAFS) and Chairman of European Network of Forensic Science Institutes ENFSI Forensic IT working group.
