| Drug-impaired driving: current trends and enforcement measures |

Professor Olaf Drummer (One day workshop) This workshop is focused on examining national and international trends in drug impaired driving, particularly in reference to the current evidence of drug associated crash risk, and the measures being used in Australasia and elsewhere to reduce the impact of drug use on road trauma. A range of speakers will provide their views and research in this ever increasing world problem. Speakers will include road safety researchers, forensic scientists and police. Comparisons of programs involving blood, urine and oral fluid testing will be included. The afternoon will include a session for free oral communications from attendees wishing to present their research findings.
He is employed at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine as Head (Forensic & Scientific Services). He also holds the position of Adjunct Professor in the Department of Forensic Medicine, Monash University. He is a forensic pharmacologist and a toxicologist and has been involved in the analysis of drugs and poisons and in the interpretation of their biological effects for over 30 years. His research interests in traffic medicine has been extensive. His research has included measuring the involvement of drug use in road crashes. He has assisted road traffic authorities, Police and Justice to develop novel strategies to detect drug impaired driving. He has published over 200 papers in scientific journals and other reports and is the main author of the book “The Forensic Pharmacology and Toxicology of Drugs of Abuse” (Arnold, June 2001). He has written the chapter on forensic toxicology in “Expert Evidence” by Freckelton & Selby (LBC), a chapter in the third edition of Clarke’s Isolation and Identification of Drugs, various chapters in the Encyclopedia of Forensic Science, the Encyclopedia of Legal Medicine and Science and the Encyclopedia of Science and Technology. He is associated Editor (toxicology) for Forensic Science International.
He has a Bachelor of Applied Science (Chemistry) and Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine (Ph.D.) from Melbourne University. He is a member of a number of professional societies including The International Association of Forensic Toxicologists (TIAFT) of which he is President Elect. |
